Electrician emergency electrician at a customer property by Lighting Electrical

Emergency electrician in Colchester

Lighting Electrical is our Colchester electrical company. We attend emergency electrician callouts for homes and businesses across Colchester, Witham, Maldon and the nearby Essex towns when power fails, a board trips, or a fault becomes unsafe.

Ten years on Colchester housing stock and I have seen most of it: terraces where the lighting circuit has been extended once too often, boards fitted before RCDs were standard, new builds with sockets nowhere near the kitchen. I check the earthing, the bonding and whether the supply will carry another load before I price anything, because the age of a house settles nothing on its own.

Who needs an emergency electrician

  • People book this work when the lights go out, a board will not reset, or a fitting is hot or smelling of burning. We cover houses, flats and small commercial premises in Colchester, Witham, Maldon, Wivenhoe, Tiptree, Kelvedon, West Mersea, Stanway and Brightlingsea.
  • Landlords and homeowners call when a whole property is dark, the cooker will not work, or only one floor still has sockets. We find whether the consumer unit, a circuit, or a failed fitting has taken the supply down.
  • A tripped breaker or RCD that will not stay on is a common reason we are asked out. We isolate the failed circuit so the rest of the house can be used while the fault is traced.
  • Sockets, switches and light fittings that smell of burning or feel hot need the circuit taken off before anyone uses them again. We make that circuit dead and tell you what has to be replaced.

What the visit covers

An emergency visit is about finding the failed part and leaving the property safe. Larger jobs such as a full rewire or a new consumer unit are quoted separately.

Included in the call-out

  • Attendance at the property in Colchester or a nearby Essex town
  • Isolation of the failed circuit, fitting or board
  • Fault finding on the circuit that has gone down
  • Temporary making safe so the rest of the installation can be used where that is possible
  • A written note of what failed and what work should follow

Not included automatically

  • A full house rewire or a planned consumer unit replacement on the same visit unless already quoted
  • Parts we do not carry in the van, which we price in writing before we fit them
  • Work on another trade such as gas, plumbing or structural fabric

What happens on the day

You deal with us from the call to the last test. We work through the failed circuit in order so the property is safe before we leave.

  1. 01

We arrive and take the failed part off

We check in with you, look at the consumer unit and the room that has lost power, and isolate the circuit or fitting that is unsafe. The rest of the board stays on where that can be done safely.

  2. 02

    We trace the fault

We test the circuit, the fittings on it and the board itself. Typical finds are a failed breaker, a short in a socket, water in an outside light, or a burnt connection in a junction.

  3. 03

We make it safe and set out the next work

Where a repair can be finished on the visit we complete it and issue a minor works certificate if the work needs one. If the board or the wiring needs a later job, we leave the property safe and give you a written price for that work.

What an emergency call-out costs

The starting price of £90 an hour for an out of hours emergency electrician covers our attendance, the first checks on the failed circuit or board, and making the property safe enough to leave.

  • That figure is a starting price, not a fixed or guaranteed total.
  • Calls are answered any time. The hourly rate applies when we attend outside opening hours.
  • If the fault needs parts or a later visit, we quote that work in writing before we start it.

What you get

You are left knowing what failed, which circuits are safe to use, and what work still has to be booked.

The immediate condition of the installation
You know which circuit or board caused the outage, what we isolated, and what you can switch on again without bringing the fault back.
Permanent work can follow separately
If the visit only made the installation safe, we quote the lasting repair in writing, such as a consumer unit replacement from £450 or further fault finding from £75 an hour in opening hours.

Why customers choose Lighting Electrical

An out of hours call reaches the electrician, not a message service. The rate is said before we travel, and further work is priced on its own once the property is safe.

Emergency electrician questions

These are the questions people in Colchester and the nearby Essex towns ask before they book an out of hours visit.

How much does an emergency electrician cost?+

Out of hours emergency electrician attendance starts at £90 an hour. That starting price buys the visit, the first tests and making the property safe. Extra parts and later work are quoted in writing first.

Valandi Kotorri

Do you come out at night and at weekends?+

We answer the phone at any time. Booked work sits in opening hours. When you need us outside those hours the out of hours rate of £90 an hour applies.

Valandi Kotorri

Will you replace the fuse board on the same visit?+

Only if the board can be made safe and we have already given you a written price. A consumer unit replacement starts at £450. Many emergency visits isolate the failed board and book the replacement for the next working day.

Who turns up?+

We do. Lighting Electrical remains responsible for the work. You speak to Lighting Electrical from the first call through to the repair. Lighting Electrical is NAPIT registered.

What towns do you cover for callouts?+

We cover Colchester, Witham, Maldon, Wivenhoe, Tiptree, Kelvedon, West Mersea, Stanway, Brightlingsea, Coggeshall, Marks Tey, Dedham, Rowhedge, Great Horkesley, Heybridge and Silver End.
