All of it. A normal week takes in the town centre and the Dutch Quarter, New Town and the Garrison streets, Lexden and Prettygate on the west side, Greenstead, Highwoods and Mile End to the north and east, and Shrub End, Monkwick and Old Heath in the south, where we are based.

We work Monday to Friday, nine to five, and those are the hours we publish because they are the hours we keep. We do not advertise a 24 hour service. If something feels unsafe outside those hours, switch the circuit off at the consumer unit, and if the whole street is dark call 105 free of charge to reach UK Power Networks, who look after the supply in this part of Essex. Then message us and we will give you the first slot we have.

Always, and quotes are free. Most of our work carries a published price you can read before you contact us. Where a job is charged by the hour we say so up front, and where materials are billed afterwards rather than included in the figure, we tell you that before anything is booked.

Usually not inside. Conservation area status mostly controls what changes on the outside of a building, so it matters for external lighting, for where an EV charger and its cable can sensibly go, and for anything visible from the street. Listed building status is the one that shapes what can be done internally, and there is a lot of listed property inside the town walls.

An EICR. In England the fixed wiring of a rented home normally has to be inspected and tested at least every five years, or sooner if the previous report says so, and the tenant gets a copy. Just over one in five Colchester households rented privately at the 2021 census, and with more than 10,000 students at the Wivenhoe Park campus two miles out of the centre, landlord testing is a large part of our week.

Not automatically. Age on its own is not a fault. What we look at is the consumer unit, the earthing and bonding, and how much the original circuits have been extended over the years. Plenty of Shrub End, Monkwick and Greenstead houses need a board change and some remedial work rather than a full rewire, and a report tells you which of the two you are looking at.

That is most of New Town and the streets off Military Road, so it comes up constantly. We plan the routes before we cut, use the voids and chases that already exist, and tell you honestly where a chase has to be a new one. We will not pretend a rewire is dust free, but we will tell you exactly where the mess is going to be.

Yes. Installation and testing work produces the certificate or report it calls for, and smaller pieces of work get a minor works certificate. Keep them. Selling, letting and refinancing are all points where somebody asks to see them.

Yes. Colchester and Tendring adopted the plan for the Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community in 2025, and an application has since been submitted for 7,750 homes on the land between Colchester, Ardleigh, Wivenhoe and Elmstead Market, with first homes expected from 2027. New wiring still needs extra sockets, outside lighting, EV charging and alterations, and we take that work on as readily as a house from the 1880s.

Yes, across the towns around it. But Colchester is home, it is where we are based, and it is where most of our week is spent.
