Recessed LED downlights and a pendant light fitted in a finished room by Lighting Electrical

Lighting Installation in Colchester

Lighting Electrical fits new lights in homes, rental properties and workplaces across Colchester and nearby Essex towns. We run the circuit, fit each fitting and leave the switches working.

Ten years on Colchester housing stock and I have seen most of it: terraces where the lighting circuit has been extended once too often, boards fitted before RCDs were standard, new builds with sockets nowhere near the kitchen. I check the earthing, the bonding and whether the supply will carry another load before I price anything, because the age of a house settles nothing on its own.

Who books lighting work

  • People book Lighting Electrical when a room is too dark, a fitting has failed, or a kitchen, bathroom or shop needs a new set of lights.
  • Homeowners in Colchester, Stanway and Witham ask us to replace a single pendant with downlights so worktops and the hob are properly lit.
  • Householders in West Mersea, Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea book a porch, path or garden light after a dark winter or a broken wall lantern.
  • Traders in Maldon, Tiptree and Kelvedon call when a unit needs new fittings after a refit, or when old fluorescent tubes have failed.

  • Connection onto the existing lighting circuit where that circuit is sound
  • Replacement of the matching switch or dimmer for those lights
  • Removal of the old fittings we take down

  • Decorative plaster repair beyond the hole for the fitting
  • Lamps, shades or fittings you have not bought or left for us

What happens on the day

We arrive, isolate the lighting circuit, fit the new lights and leave you with working switches.

  1. 01

    Arrival and isolation

We check the rooms on the job, isolate the lighting circuit at the fuse board and confirm which fittings are coming out and which are going in.

  2. 02

    Fitting the lights

We cut or reuse the ceiling holes, run any extra cable needed, fix each fitting and connect the switch or dimmer for that circuit.

  3. 03

    Test and certificate

We power the circuit back up, test each light, tidy the ceiling and issue a minor works certificate when the work needs one.

What a lighting scheme costs

A downlight from £65 buys the fitting of that light, the connection onto the existing lighting circuit and a working switch for it.

  • Prices are starting prices and rise with ceiling type, number of fittings and the length of new cable.
  • A full room, outdoor fittings or a new lighting circuit is quoted in writing before we start.
  • We are registered with NAPIT for lighting work that needs notifying.

What you get

You are left with working lights, marked controls and a ceiling that still reads as one finish.

Fittings and controls handed over
Every new light works from its switch or dimmer, and we show you which control runs which room before we leave.
Finishes remain clearly separated
Ceiling paint, plaster and the fitting sit as three separate surfaces, with no smear of filler across the lamp or the rose.

Official electrical guidance

Two public guides cover common lighting safety questions and when Building Regulations apply.

Why customers choose Lighting Electrical

We quote the lighting job in writing first, we do the fitting ourselves, and we leave a certificate when the work needs one.

Lighting installation questions

These are the lighting questions we are asked most in Colchester and the surrounding Essex towns.

How much does a downlight cost?+

Downlight installation starts from £65 per fitting. A kitchen or landing with several holes, fire rated cans or a new cable run is quoted in writing first.

Valandi Kotorri

Do you fit outdoor lights?+

Yes. We fit porch lanterns, wall lights and garden fittings on houses in Colchester, West Mersea, Wivenhoe and Brightlingsea, using weatherproof glands and a switched supply.

Valandi Kotorri

Will you take the old fittings away?+

Yes. Pendants, downlights and wall lights we remove leave with us unless you want to keep a shade or a decorative fitting.

Do new lights need a certificate?+

A like for like swap on an existing circuit often needs a minor works certificate from £95. A new lighting circuit or work in a bathroom may also need notifying. We are registered with NAPIT for that work.

Can you use lights I have already bought?+

Yes, if the fitting is suitable for the ceiling and the circuit. Bring the make and wattage to the quote so we can check the cut out, the fire rating and the driver.
