Can downlights go in an old ceiling?+
Usually yes, but the joists and the depth above the plaster settle where each one can sit. In an older Colchester house the fittings follow the joists rather than a grid drawn on paper. We look above the ceiling before cutting anything.

Do I need a certificate for new lights?+
Yes, the work is certified. Adding to an existing lighting circuit is covered by a minor works certificate from £95, while a whole new lighting circuit is notifiable work. Our NAPIT registration means we certify the new circuit and it is notified to Colchester City Council.
Will the power be off while you fit the lights?+
Only the lighting circuit goes off. Sockets stay live where they sit on their own circuits, so the fridge, the kettle and the router keep running. Each circuit goes back on once it is tested.
Can you fit lights on a house in a conservation area?+
