Will the power be off while you test?+
Yes, but not all of it at once. Each circuit is isolated in turn for the dead tests and switched back on before the next one starts. Anything that must stay powered, such as a freezer or medical equipment, is worked around.

How long is an EICR valid for?+
A rented home needs a new one every five years, or sooner if the tenancy changes. For a home you live in, the report itself states the date the next inspection is due. Commercial premises are usually on a five year cycle as well.
What do C1, C2 and C3 mean on the report?+
C1 is a danger present right now and is made safe on the day. C2 is potentially dangerous and has to be put right for the report to pass. C3 is a recommendation only and does not fail the installation.
What happens if my report comes back unsatisfactory?+
An unsatisfactory result means at least one C1, C2 or FI observation was recorded. You get a written price covering only those items, and nothing is carried out until you accept it. Once the work is done the affected circuits are retested and the result is updated.
Do I need an EICR to sell my house?+
