Wall-mounted electric vehicle chargepoint installation by Lighting Electrical

EV charger installation in Colchester

Lighting Electrical fits 7.4kW EV chargers for homes and small businesses in Colchester, Witham, Maldon and nearby Essex towns. Lighting Electrical remains responsible for the work and we quote, install and test the chargepoint ourselves.

Ten years on Colchester housing stock and I have seen most of it: terraces where the lighting circuit has been extended once too often, boards fitted before RCDs were standard, new builds with sockets nowhere near the kitchen. I check the earthing, the bonding and whether the supply will carry another load before I price anything, because the age of a house settles nothing on its own.

Who books an EV charger in Essex

  • People in Colchester, Witham, Maldon, Wivenhoe, Tiptree and the nearby towns book this work when a car needs a dedicated chargepoint at the house or small premises.
  • You have taken delivery of a plug in car and need a 7.4kW chargepoint on the driveway, garage wall or parking bay rather than a three pin socket.
  • A tenant, staff member or visitor needs a chargepoint on a private bay. We fit the unit, label the circuit and leave the paperwork for the property.
  • The car is already here but the existing board or cable cannot carry a dedicated charger. We check the board first and say what the circuit needs.

What the installation covers

This is what a typical 7.4kW home chargepoint visit covers, and what stays off the list unless the written quote names it.

Included when agreed

  • A look at the consumer unit, earthing and the proposed wall or post before we order the unit
  • Supply and fitting of a 7.4kW single phase chargepoint on a dedicated circuit
  • Cable, isolation, RCD protection and labelling for that circuit
  • Testing of the circuit and the chargepoint, then a certificate for the work
  • A walk through of how to start a charge and how to isolate the unit

Not included automatically

  • A new consumer unit, a three phase supply or a network upgrade at the street
  • Groundworks, a new driveway post base or making good plaster and brick beyond the fixing
  • A 22kW unit, a forklift charger or a commercial bank of bays

What happens on the day

We arrive, fit the chargepoint on the quoted circuit and leave you with a working unit and the certificate.

  1. 01

Arrival and a last look at the run

We check the board, the earth, the wall or post and the cable path we priced. If the run has changed we stop and give a new written figure before we cut in.

  2. 02

    Fitting the chargepoint

We isolate the board, run the dedicated circuit, mount the 7.4kW unit and terminate the tails. The old three pin lead is left out of the circuit.

  3. 03

    Test, first charge and paperwork

We test the circuit and the unit, start a charge if the car is on site, then hand over the certificate and show you the isolator.

What an EV charger costs

A 7.4kW EV charger installation starts from £750. That starting price is for a standard single phase home chargepoint where the consumer unit and cable run are suitable.

  • The starting price covers the chargepoint, the usual cable run and testing. A longer run, a new circuit or extra earth work is priced on the written quote.
  • We do not treat the figure as a fixed total. We confirm the price in writing before we book the day.
  • Calls are answered any time. Booked fitting takes place in opening hours unless you book emergency electrician cover.

What you get

You are left with a working 7.4kW chargepoint, a marked circuit and a clear note of any board or network work that sat outside the visit.

A chargepoint ready for the stated use
The 7.4kW unit is live on its own circuit, tested, and ready for overnight charging at the house or the private bay we priced.
Property and network changes stay explicit
If the board, earth or the street supply needs extra work, that sits on the written quote as its own line rather than being folded into the charger price.

EV charger questions

These are the questions we get before a home chargepoint booking in Colchester and the surrounding towns.

How much does a 7.4kW EV charger cost?+

EV charger installation for a 7.4kW unit starts from £750. A longer cable run, a new circuit at the board or extra earth work is added on the written quote.

Valandi Kotorri

Do I need a new fuse board for a charger?+

Not always. Many Colchester and Witham houses can take a dedicated charger on the existing consumer unit. If the board is full or lacks the right RCD, we price a board change separately from £450.

Valandi Kotorri

Will you deal with the electricity network?+

We tell you when the chargepoint needs a notice or an upgrade at the street. Network work is not inside the £750 starting price.

Can you fit a charger on a rented house?+

Yes, with the landlord's say so. We leave the circuit marked and the certificate with the property so the next tenant can see what was fitted.

Do you fit commercial or forklift chargers on this visit?+

The 7.4kW unit here is for a house or small premises. Forklift charger installation starts from £700 and is a separate booking.
